Last Sunday’s Mighty Untouchables Show Was A Hit!

LJCBtS_Untouchables-2014_ 016This past Sunday’s show was The Mighty Untouchables debut at La Jolla Concerts By the Sea and what a show! I don’t always get to make it to every show, but I wasn’t gonna miss this one!

Courtesy of The City of San Diego Arts & Cultural Commission who sponsored the show and led by bandleader Mark Fulton on guitar and vocals, the Mighty Untouchables brought an impressively large sound including full horn section and keyboards. Mighty Untouchables had The Cove jumpin’ despite a lighter crowd than we might’ve expected had the weather been more promising.

(Last Sunday with Bill Magee Blues Band was another “does the show go on or does the rain dampen our fun” kind of decision. Fortunately, in both cases, the powers that be and I don’t just mean our Board, gave us a break and great music won out over the wet.)

Pumping out a wide variety of music hard NOT to dance to, The Mighty Untouchables showed a very eager audience why they’re one of San Diego’s top dance bands. From Bruno Mars to Michael Jackson to Cee Lo Green to Isley Brothers to Celia Cruz…fine musicianship and vocals gave us another excellent afternoon of family-friendly music and fun at La Jolla’s beautiful Cove.

As a musician myself for whom the 70’s were my formative years as a player and appreciator, I got to hear  some great songs that don’t often come my way performed live. Just a couple of these I particularly enjoyed were Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4” and Boston’s “Long Time” (including the “Foreplay” intro featuring Bobby Cressey on keyboards. Padre fans may know Bobby from his Petco Park gig behind the big organ there.)

Other highlights included vocalist Leonard Tucker’s showcase of some of his best known work.  Many San Diegans know Leonard’s voice from his “Mossy Nissan” jingle and San Diego Charger’s “Super Chargers” tune which features him on lead. Musical Director/drummer/vocalist Mike Halguin (you may know him from Big Time Operator) hammered out an impressive drum solo which had the audience whooping and grinning in awe as he demonstrated his prowess behind the kit.

The Mighty Untouchables are sure to become favorites at La Jolla Concerts…if you missed them ’cause of the weather, make sure to catch ’em next time!
